In 2016, I ventured into the Brazilian jungle to fish for Peacock bass. Knowing little about the fish I expected to catch, I had to rely on suggestions from the tour promoter and the internet’s myriad of self-proclaimed experts. I listened to the hype and was over-rodded and over-lined to put it gently. I hooked and landed a bunch of fish including both butterfly and speckled peacocks but none over ten pounds and certainly no teeners (fish from 13 to 19 pounds) that the Brazilian Amazon tributaries usually deliver, but as an Alaska pilot and guide, the warm weather and the jungle environment were intriguing.
In 2018 I accepted an invitation to join 15 serious saltwater flyrodders on a long-range IGFA record-chasing event into Mexican waters primarily targeting striped marlin and wahoo.
While not even close to record size, that fish enhanced my interest in pursuing IGFA records and brought an entirely new challenge to my fishing desires.
As of September 2024 I am happy to report and share with you some recent good news from the IGFA. All the fish I submitted for records have been verified!
IGFA World Record - Peacock Bass
I booked Tucunare Lodge through Fly Fishing Ecuador Tours, Javier Guevara in Chicago in November of 2021. Javier was pleasant, prompt and provided good information prior to receiving my deposit. After he received the deposit I quickly received the trip itinerary and all the information necessary to book my flight. I choose American Airlines to fly from Boise to Dallas and then a plane change from Dallas to Bogota Colombia, but many flight options are available.
Overall I rate the entire experience in Colombia as great. I’m already booked for 2023!
I just returned from a fabulous 10 days of fishing in British Columbia Canada for Salmon and Giant Sturgeon. After salmon fishing for four days as a warm up for the Salmon Masters Tournament at our favorite West Coast Resort’s Hippa Lodge, I traveled back to Vancouver and met Stu Hay and his SMT partner Mike for a quick giant sturgeon adventure on the mighty Frazier River. What a great trip. I booked the sturgeon venture thru the BC SportFishing Group out of Harrison Hot Springs ( 604-796-3345). The trip was about $700 (Canadian) for each of us and that also included 2 nights at a good hotel, all fishing gear and great lunches. I would recommend this trip to any and all who are up for the challenge big fish present.

Kulik Lodge is Alaska’s premier fly out sportfishing lodge and is located in a spectacular wilderness setting. Superb fishing is available adjacent to the lodge on the Kulik River.
Bo Bennett and Ray Beadle hosted their group Sept 26-30, 2017 on the fabulous Kulik River for the ultimate in rainbow trout with a fly rod. The Kulik River is the epitome of a rainbow trout stream. It's gin clear water, gravel bottom and plentiful food supply provide an ideal habitat for the large population of native rainbow trout. The Kulik is chronologically the last of the sockeye salmon spawning rivers. By mid-September when the spawning cycles end or get washed out in other nearby rivers like the Moraine, Big Ku, and the upper Alagnak, the trout return to the Kulik River to keep gorging on salmon eggs.
